Besivance Ophthalmic Solution

What is Besivance?

Besivance (besifloxacin ophthalmic solution) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Fluoroquinolones are a class of antibiotics known for their broad-spectrum activity against various bacteria. Besifloxacin specifically targets and combats bacterial growth.

This medication is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (pinkeye). It's effective against a range of bacterial strains commonly responsible for this eye infection.

Besivance is applied directly to the eye and works locally to reduce the bacterial load. Always follow your doctor's instructions for proper usage.

Important Information

Before using Besivance, it's crucial to inform your doctor of any allergies, particularly to besifloxacin or other fluoroquinolones. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe.

Precisely follow your doctor's prescribed dosage and duration of treatment. Do not exceed the recommended amount or use it for longer than advised, even if symptoms improve. Premature discontinuation could lead to treatment failure and the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Potential side effects, although not experienced by everyone, may include eye irritation (burning, stinging, itching), redness, swelling, or increased eye discharge. More serious reactions require immediate medical attention and include severe eye pain, vision changes, or signs of a systemic infection (fever, body aches).

Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment. The preservative in Besivance might be harmful to contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after administering the drops before inserting lenses. Contact lenses should not be worn while the infection is active.

Before Using Besivance

Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their doctor before using Besivance. The safety and efficacy of besifloxacin during pregnancy and breastfeeding haven't been fully established.

Individuals with known sensitivities to fluoroquinolone antibiotics should exercise caution and discuss the risks and benefits with their physician.

How to Use Besivance

Administer Besivance precisely as directed by your ophthalmologist. Always wash your hands thoroughly before applying the eye drops.

Here's how to apply the eye drops correctly:

  • Gently shake the bottle once before each use.
  • Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket.
  • Hold the dropper above your eye, keeping the tip away from your eye, fingers, and other surfaces.
  • Squeeze a single drop into the pocket. Close your eye gently and press gently on the inner corner of your eye (near your nose) for about a minute.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination.

Complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms resolve early. Stopping treatment prematurely can result in incomplete eradication of the infection and potential recurrence.

Store Besivance at room temperature, away from excessive heat or moisture.
