Cyclosporine Eye Drops
What is Cyclosporine Ophthalmic?
Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant medication. Cyclosporine ophthalmic (for eye use) works by increasing tear production, which is often reduced by inflammation in the eyes. It's specifically designed to tackle chronic dry eye caused by inflammation. This medication may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Important Information
Always follow the instructions on your prescription label and packaging. Be sure to inform all your healthcare providers about any medical conditions, allergies, and all other medications you are currently taking.
Before Using Cyclosporine Ophthalmic
You shouldn't use cyclosporine ophthalmic if you have a known allergy to cyclosporine. The effects of this medication on unborn babies aren't fully understood, so inform your doctor if you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Similarly, it's unclear if cyclosporine ophthalmic passes into breast milk and potential effects on nursing infants. Discuss this with your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Cyclosporine ophthalmic is not approved for use in individuals under 16 years of age.
How to Use Cyclosporine Ophthalmic
Always adhere to your prescription instructions. Do not alter the dosage or duration of treatment without consulting your doctor. The typical dose is one drop in each eye twice daily, approximately every 12 hours. Thoroughly read all patient information and instructions provided.
Before using the drops:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Gently invert the bottle a few times to mix the medication. The solution should appear white.
- Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to form a pocket. Hold the dropper above your eye, tip down. Look upwards and away from the dropper, and squeeze out one drop.
- Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes, keeping your head tilted down. Gently press your finger against the inner corner of your eye for about a minute to prevent drainage into the tear duct.
- Wait at least 15 minutes before using artificial tears or other prescribed eye drops.
Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface. Contamination can lead to infection and serious vision problems. Discard the eye drops if the liquid changes color or contains particles. Obtain a new bottle from your pharmacist. Each single-use bottle is intended for one application only (in one or both eyes). Dispose of the bottle after use, even if there's remaining medication.
Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
Missed Dose
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
What to Avoid While Using Cyclosporine Ophthalmic
Do not use cyclosporine ophthalmic while wearing contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the medication before inserting your contact lenses. If you experience dry eyes, discuss the possibility of foregoing contact lens use with your doctor.
