Clomiphene Citrate Tablets

What is Clomiphene Citrate?

Clomiphene citrate is a fertility medication primarily used to increase the chances of pregnancy in women. Its mechanism of action involves stimulating ovulation, the process where a mature egg is released from the ovary. Unlike some other fertility treatments, clomiphene citrate alone doesn't significantly raise the risk of multiple births. However, a slightly increased chance of twins exists; approximately 5 out of every 100 women taking this medication may experience a twin pregnancy.

In some cases, clomiphene citrate may be prescribed to men experiencing fertility issues related to low sperm counts.

Important Information for Your Doctor

Before starting clomiphene citrate, it's crucial to inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, including:

  • Adrenal gland disease
  • Blood vessel disease or a history of blood clots
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Liver disease
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Pituitary gland disease
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Allergies to clomiphene citrate, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • Current pregnancy (clomiphene citrate should not be used during pregnancy)
  • Breastfeeding

How to Take Clomiphene Citrate

Clomiphene citrate is taken orally with a glass of water. The exact dosage and duration of treatment are determined by your doctor and should be followed precisely. Most women take it for five days, but this can vary. Your doctor will provide a specific starting date and detailed instructions. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage.

Children should only take this medication under the strict guidance of a pediatrician.

In case of an overdose, immediately contact a poison control center or emergency room.

This medication is for individual use only; do not share it with others.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose.

Potential Drug Interactions

Clomiphene citrate may interact with certain substances. It's essential to inform your doctor about all medications you're taking, including:

  • Herbal or dietary supplements such as blue cohosh, black cohosh, chasteberry, or DHEA
  • Prasterone
  • Other prescription and over-the-counter drugs

Also, disclose your consumption of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs, as these substances can influence the effectiveness of clomiphene citrate. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medication.

Monitoring and Precautions

Understanding ovulation and timing intercourse accordingly is critical for maximizing the chances of conception. Regular check-ups with your healthcare professional are necessary to monitor your progress. This may involve blood tests to assess hormone levels or home urine tests to detect ovulation.

While clomiphene citrate doesn't significantly increase the risk of multiple births compared to other fertility treatments, the possibility of twins is slightly higher (approximately 5%).

Stop taking clomiphene citrate and contact your doctor immediately if you suspect you're pregnant.

Clomiphene citrate is not intended for long-term use. Most women who benefit from the medication see results within the first three cycles. Treatment usually lasts for a maximum of six cycles, under the supervision of your doctor.

Drowsiness or dizziness may occur. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you know how the medication affects you. Avoid sudden changes in posture to prevent dizziness or fainting.

Alcohol and tobacco can reduce pregnancy chances. Limit or avoid their use during fertility treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Report these side effects to your doctor immediately:

  • Allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue)
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Vision changes
  • Fluid retention
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pelvic pain or bloating
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Sudden weight gain

Side effects that usually don't require immediate medical attention (but should be reported if persistent or bothersome):

  • Breast discomfort
  • Hot flashes
  • Mild pelvic discomfort
  • Mild nausea

This is not an exhaustive list of all possible side effects.

Storage

Keep clomiphene citrate out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F), away from heat, light, and moisture. Discard any unused medication after the expiration date.
