Valproic Acid Syrup

What is Valproic Acid?

Valproic acid is a medication primarily used to manage various types of seizure disorders. It's often prescribed alongside other anti-seizure medications for optimal effectiveness. Beyond seizure control, valproic acid also plays a role in treating manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder (manic depression) and in preventing migraine headaches. However, its use should always be under the strict guidance of a medical professional.

Warnings: Serious Risks and Precautions

Valproic acid carries a risk of liver failure, which can be fatal. This risk is heightened in children under 2 and individuals with pre-existing liver problems due to genetic disorders.

Important Note: Valproic acid is contraindicated in individuals with liver disease, urea cycle disorders, or genetic disorders like Alpers' disease or Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome.

Pregnancy and Valproic Acid: The use of valproic acid during pregnancy is a serious consideration. It poses a risk of birth defects and may negatively impact the cognitive development of the child. However, uncontrolled seizures during pregnancy also present a risk to both the mother and the baby. Therefore, the decision to use valproic acid during pregnancy must be made in close consultation with a doctor who can weigh the potential benefits against the risks. Do not start or stop taking valproic acid during pregnancy without your doctor's explicit advice.

Monitor for Liver and Pancreas Issues: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms suggestive of liver or pancreas problems while taking valproic acid. These symptoms may include loss of appetite, upper stomach pain (potentially radiating to the back), persistent nausea or vomiting, dark urine, facial swelling, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Abrupt Cessation: Never stop taking valproic acid without consulting your doctor. Sudden discontinuation can trigger severe, even life-threatening seizures.

Before Taking Valproic Acid: Important Considerations

You should not use valproic acid if you are allergic to it or have any of the following conditions:

  • Liver disease
  • A urea cycle disorder
  • A genetic mitochondrial disorder such as Alpers' disease or Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome, particularly in children under 2 years old.

Inform Your Doctor: Before starting valproic acid, be sure to inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Liver problems caused by a genetic mitochondrial disorder
  • Depression, mental illness, or suicidal thoughts or actions
  • A family history of urea cycle disorders or unexplained infant deaths
  • HIV or CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection

Suicidal Thoughts: Some young people experience suicidal thoughts when initiating valproic acid treatment. Regular monitoring by your doctor and vigilance from family members are crucial.

Pregnancy and Birth Control: The use of valproic acid during pregnancy can lead to serious birth defects and affect cognitive development. If you are of childbearing age, effective birth control is crucial while taking this medication. Discuss the use of hormonal contraception with your doctor, as estrogen can interact with valproic acid and potentially reduce its effectiveness in preventing seizures.

Breastfeeding: The safety of breastfeeding while using valproic acid needs to be discussed with your doctor to assess the potential risks.

How to Take Valproic Acid

Always follow your doctor's instructions and the information provided on your prescription label. Dosage adjustments may be necessary.

Administration: Valproic acid oral solution is taken by mouth. Adequate fluid intake is important, as it may influence dosage. Taking the medication with food may help if it upsets your stomach.

Dosage Measurement: Use a calibrated measuring spoon or cup for precise dosage.

Blood Tests: Regular blood tests are often necessary to monitor your progress and adjust the dosage as needed.

Surgery: Inform your surgeon about your valproic acid use before any surgical procedure.

Medical Identification: In emergency situations, carrying medical identification that indicates your use of valproic acid is recommended.

Gradual Discontinuation: Never stop taking valproic acid abruptly. Stopping suddenly may lead to severe seizures. Your doctor will guide you through a gradual dose reduction.

Storage: Store valproic acid at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

What to Avoid While Taking Valproic Acid

Alcohol: Consuming alcohol may worsen some side effects of valproic acid.

Driving and Hazardous Activities: Avoid driving or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you know how valproic acid affects you. It may impair your reaction time.

Valproic Acid Side Effects

Seek Immediate Medical Attention: If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling), or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling), seek immediate medical help.

Serious Drug Reaction: A serious drug reaction affecting multiple body systems may manifest as skin rash, fever, swollen glands, muscle aches, extreme weakness, unusual bruising, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you experience these, seek medical attention immediately.

Liver and Pancreas Problems: Report any symptoms suggesting liver or pancreas problems (loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, persistent nausea or vomiting, dark urine, facial swelling, or jaundice) to your doctor immediately.

Mental Health Changes: Report any new or worsening mental health symptoms such as mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disturbances, impulsivity, irritability, agitation, hostility, aggression, restlessness, hyperactivity, or suicidal thoughts to your doctor without delay.

Other Side Effects: Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Confusion, fatigue, feeling cold, vomiting, changes in mental state
  • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nosebleeds, mouthbleeds, gum bleeding), purple or red pinpoint spots under the skin
  • Severe drowsiness
  • Worsening seizures

Older Adults: Older adults may be more prone to experiencing severe drowsiness.

Common Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, headache, tremors, gait or coordination problems, blurred or double vision, hair loss, appetite changes, and weight gain.

Drug Interactions

Valproic acid can interact with many other medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, as well as any new medications you start or stop taking.
