What is Cephalexin?

Cephalexin monohydrate is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by killing or slowing the growth of bacteria that cause infections. This medication is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections. However, it's important to remember that cephalexin won't work for viral infections like colds or the flu.

Important Information for Your Doctor

Before starting treatment with cephalexin, be sure to inform your doctor about any of the following:

• Kidney disease: Cephalexin is processed by the kidneys, so kidney problems may affect how your body handles the medication.
• Stomach or intestinal issues, particularly colitis: Existing gastrointestinal problems could be worsened by cephalexin.
• Allergies: Any history of allergic reactions to cephalexin, other cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillins, other antibiotics, or any other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives should be disclosed.
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Cephalexin should only be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding under strict medical supervision.

How to Take Cephalexin

Take cephalexin by mouth with a full glass of water. You can take it with or without food. It's crucial to take your medication at evenly spaced intervals as directed by your doctor. Don't increase the dosage or take it more frequently than prescribed. Finish the entire course of medication, even if you feel better before you've finished all the capsules. Skipping doses or stopping early can lead to treatment failure and potential recurrence of the infection.

Parents should consult their pediatrician before giving cephalexin to children. While it can be prescribed for children, there are specific precautions to consider.

Overdose: In case of an overdose, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Important Note: This medication is for your use only. Do not share it with others.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next scheduled dose. Never double up on doses. Maintain at least a 4- to 6-hour gap between doses.

Potential Drug Interactions

Cephalexin can interact with other medications. The most notable examples include:

• Probenecid
• Certain other antibiotics

• Severe or watery diarrhea
• Unusual weakness or fatigue
• Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)

• Gas or heartburn
• Genital or anal irritation
• Headache
• Joint or muscle pain
• Nausea or vomiting

Storage

Keep out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit (15 and 30 degrees Celsius). Dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
