Loniten

minoxidil

Loniten (minoxidil) is used to treat high blood pressure. Loniten helps blood vessels relax, making it easier for blood to flow through them and lowering your blood pressure. Minoxidil may stimulate the growth of human hairs by prolonging anagen through these proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects on DPCs. more

Loniten Tablet

What is Loniten?

Loniten (minoxidil) is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes and widens blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow. It's primarily used to treat severely high blood pressure (hypertension) that's causing symptoms or damaging vital organs. Importantly, Loniten is typically prescribed alongside two other medications to help minimize the risk of serious side effects. It's crucial to remember that Loniten tablets are not for promoting hair growth; only topical minoxidil (like Rogaine) is suitable for that purpose. Loniten may also be used for other purposes not detailed here.

Warnings

You should absolutely avoid Loniten if you have pheochromocytoma (a tumor of the adrenal gland). As mentioned, Loniten is usually combined with other medications to reduce the chances of severe side effects. Always follow your doctor's instructions precisely regarding all medications. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience new or worsening chest pain, shortness of breath (even when lying down), pain during breathing, or a rapid heartbeat.

Before Taking Loniten

Refrain from using Loniten if you're allergic to it or have pheochromocytoma. To ensure your safety, inform your doctor about any of the following conditions before starting Loniten:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Angina (chest pain), or a recent heart attack
  • Kidney disease (or if you're on dialysis)
  • Asthma
  • Migraine headaches
  • Epilepsy or other seizure disorders

While the effects of Loniten on unborn babies aren't fully understood, excessive hair growth in newborns has been observed when mothers used Loniten during pregnancy. Discuss your pregnancy plans with your doctor. Minoxidil can pass into breast milk, potentially harming a nursing infant; breastfeeding should be avoided while using Loniten. Don't give this medication to children without consulting a doctor.

How to Take Loniten

Always adhere to the instructions on your prescription label. Your doctor may adjust your dosage to optimize results. Never alter the prescribed amount or duration of treatment. Your first dose might be administered in a hospital or clinic to manage any immediate side effects.

Carefully read all provided patient information. Do not change your dosage or schedule without consulting your doctor. Regularly monitor your heart rate (your doctor will show you how). Weigh yourself daily and inform your doctor of any rapid weight gain (over 5 pounds). Your blood pressure and heart function (using an ECG) will require frequent monitoring. Continue taking Loniten as directed, even if you feel well; high blood pressure often lacks noticeable symptoms. Long-term use may be necessary. Never share your medication.

Store Loniten at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

What to Avoid While Taking Loniten

You may need to reduce salt intake while using Loniten. Avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes unless your doctor advises otherwise. Avoid sudden changes in position to prevent dizziness. Get up slowly. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using cough or cold medications containing decongestants like phenylephrine.

Loniten Side Effects

Seek immediate medical attention for allergic reactions (hives, breathing difficulties, facial swelling). Loniten can cause serious side effects. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • New or worsening chest pain
  • Chest pain radiating to your jaw or shoulder
  • Rapid or pounding heartbeat
  • Swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet
  • Rapid weight gain (especially in your face and midsection)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness or feeling faint
  • Fluid buildup in the lungs (painful breathing, shortness of breath when lying down, wheezing, gasping, cough with foamy mucus)
  • Severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, facial or tongue swelling, burning eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple rash that spreads and blisters)

Common Side Effects

Common side effects can include:

  • Changes in body or facial hair (color, length, thickness)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rash
  • Breast pain or tenderness

Drug Interactions

Other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products, may interact with minoxidil. Inform all your healthcare providers about all medications you are currently taking, and any you start or stop using.
