What is Opsumit (Macitentan)?

Opsumit, containing the active ingredient macitentan, is a medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is a serious condition where blood pressure in the arteries leading to the lungs becomes abnormally high, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively. Opsumit works by relaxing and widening these blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure in the lungs and improving the heart's ability to circulate blood. This ultimately improves exercise capacity and helps prevent the condition from worsening.

It's important to note that Opsumit is subject to specific prescribing guidelines and may not be suitable for everyone.

Warnings: Serious Pregnancy Risks

Opsumit is contraindicated in pregnancy and poses significant risks to a developing fetus. It can cause birth defects and harm the unborn baby. Women of childbearing potential should not use this medication unless they fully understand and accept these risks.

Before starting treatment, a negative pregnancy test is required. Monthly pregnancy tests are mandatory throughout treatment and one month after treatment ends. Highly effective birth control is crucial during treatment and for at least 30 days afterward. Discuss appropriate birth control methods with your doctor. Acceptable methods include:

  • Tubal ligation
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Birth control implant
  • Hormonal methods (pills, injections, patches, rings) used in conjunction with a barrier method (condom, diaphragm, cervical cap, with spermicide)
  • Two barrier methods (e.g., diaphragm and condom with spermicide)

Even if you believe you are not fertile, consider these factors: puberty onset (even without menstruation), lack of hysterectomy or ovary removal, and not having gone through menopause (12 consecutive months without a menstrual period).

If you are a parent or caregiver of a female child taking Opsumit, discuss the medication with their physician at the first signs of puberty (breast development or pubic hair).

Men should be aware that macitentan may decrease sperm count and potentially affect fertility.

Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking Opsumit.

Before Taking Opsumit

You should not take Opsumit if you are allergic to macitentan or if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Inform your doctor about your medical history, particularly if you have:

  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease
  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
