Ferrogen XT®

iron , folic acid

Ferrogen XT® tablet contains Iron and Folic Acid (vitamin B9). Folic acid is essential to numerous bodily functions ranging from nucleotide biosynthesis to the remethylation of homocysteine. It is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth. Both children and adults require folic acid to produce healthy red blood cells and prevent anemia. Iron transports oxygen throughout the body and maintains red blood cells, thus making an individual feel energetic and preventing anemia. This product is often assigned during pregnancy. more

Ferrogen XT® Tablet

What is Ferrogen XT®?

Ferrogen XT® is a medication used to treat various conditions related to iron and folate deficiencies. It's primarily employed in cases of iron deficiency anemia, a condition where the body lacks sufficient iron to produce enough healthy red blood cells. This deficiency can stem from various sources, including poor diet, blood loss, or impaired iron absorption. Ferrogen XT® also addresses folate deficiency, which is crucial for red blood cell production and overall cell growth. A deficiency in folate can lead to megaloblastic anemia, characterized by abnormally large red blood cells. The drug's combination of ferrous ascorbate (an iron compound) and folic acid works to correct these deficiencies.

Ferrogen XT® may be prescribed for:

  • Iron deficiency anemia
  • Anemias resulting from nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy, infancy, or childhood
  • Megaloblastic anemias caused by folate deficiency
  • Folate deficiency
  • Conditions affecting nutrient absorption
  • In some cases, to help reduce the risk of neural tube defects (like spina bifida) in a developing fetus (when prescribed by a doctor).

Important Note: Ferrogen XT® should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is not a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Uses

Ferrogen XT® is used in the treatment and management of:

  • Iron deficiency anemia
  • Nutritional anemias (related to pregnancy, infancy, or childhood)
  • Megaloblastic anemias due to folate deficiency
  • Folate deficiency
  • Poor nutrient absorption
  • Spina bifida prevention (in specific cases during pregnancy)

  • Any allergies you have.
  • Pre-existing health conditions (such as liver or kidney disease).
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.

Specific precautions include:

  • Folic acid alone is insufficient treatment for pernicious anemia (vitamin B12 deficiency).
  • Limit or avoid alcohol consumption, particularly if you have liver disease.
  • Consult your doctor if you have hemosiderosis, hemolytic anemia, or hemochromatosis (iron overload disorders).
  • High doses of folic acid can mask the symptoms of pernicious anemia.
  • Inform your doctor of any known allergies to iron supplements.
