Cyclosporine Eye Drops
What is Cyclosporine Ophthalmic?
Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant medication. Cyclosporine ophthalmic (for eye use) works by increasing tear production, which can be significantly reduced by inflammation in the eyes. This medication is specifically used to treat chronic dry eye stemming from inflammation. It may also be prescribed for other conditions not detailed here.
Important Information
Always adhere to the instructions on your prescription label and accompanying information. Inform all your healthcare providers about your medical history, allergies, and all medications you're currently taking. Open communication with your doctor is key for safe and effective treatment.
Before Using Cyclosporine Ophthalmic
You should not use cyclosporine ophthalmic if you have a known allergy to cyclosporine.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The effects of cyclosporine ophthalmic on unborn or nursing babies are not fully understood. Discuss your pregnancy or breastfeeding plans with your doctor before using this medication.
Children: Cyclosporine ophthalmic is not approved for use in individuals younger than 16 years old.
How to Use Cyclosporine Ophthalmic
Always follow the dosage instructions on your prescription label. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration of treatment. The typical dose is one drop in each eye twice daily, approximately every 12 hours.
Thoroughly read all provided patient information, medication guides, and instructions. Don't hesitate to ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Before applying the drops:
- Wash your hands.
- Invert the bottle a few times to mix the solution. The solution should appear milky white.
- Tilt your head back. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket. Hold the dropper above your eye, with the tip pointing down. Look upward and away from the dropper, then squeeze out one drop.
- Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes, keeping your head tilted down. Gently press your finger against the inner corner of your eye for about a minute to prevent drainage into the tear duct.
- Wait at least 15 minutes before using any other eye drops, including artificial tears.
Important Reminders: Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface. Discard the single-use bottle after use, even if there's some solution remaining. Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.
Missed Dose
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
What to Avoid While Using Cyclosporine Ophthalmic
Do not use cyclosporine ophthalmic while wearing contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after application before inserting your contacts. If you experience dry eyes, discuss with your doctor whether contact lens wear is advisable.
Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Side Effects
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using cyclosporine ophthalmic and contact your doctor immediately if you experience:
- Eye pain
- Eye swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting, or drainage (possible signs of infection)
Common side effects may include:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Mild redness or itching
- Blurred vision
- Foreign body sensation in the eye
