Zovirax Ophthalmic Ointment

What is Zovirax and What is it Used For?

Zovirax Ophthalmic Ointment contains aciclovir, an antiviral medication. It's specifically designed to treat eye infections caused by the Herpes simplex virus. This common virus can affect the cornea (the front part of your eyeball), and Zovirax works by either killing the virus or halting its growth in this area.

How to Apply Zovirax to Your Eye

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to properly apply the ointment:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Gently pull down the lower eyelid of the affected eye using your clean finger.
  3. Tilt your head back slightly and look upwards.
  4. Apply a 1cm (about ½ inch) ribbon of Zovirax to the inside of your lower eyelid. Try your best to avoid touching your eye with the tube tip.
  5. Close your eye gently for about 30 seconds.
  6. Wash your hands again after application.

Important Information Before Using Zovirax

Do not use Zovirax if:

  • You have an allergy (hypersensitivity) to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredient in the ointment. If you're unsure, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings and Precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Zovirax if:

  • You wear contact lenses. You should stop wearing them while using Zovirax.

Other Medicines and Zovirax

Let your doctor or pharmacist know about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal remedies. This helps avoid potential interactions.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Always seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before using any medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Driving and Using Machines

Blurred vision is a possible side effect of Zovirax Eye Ointment. Refrain from driving or operating machinery until your vision clears.

How to Use Zovirax

Follow your doctor's instructions precisely. If you are unsure about anything, seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist.

Adults and Children

  • Continue using Zovirax for at least three days after your eye infection has improved.
  • Expect some blurred vision for 5-10 minutes after application. Wait until your vision is clear before driving or using tools/machinery.
  • The standard dose is 1cm (about ½ inch) applied to the infected eye five times daily, spaced roughly four hours apart. Suggested times: 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm, and 11pm.

Important Notes

  • If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose.
  • Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you accidentally use too much Zovirax or if you swallow any of the ointment.
  • Never double up on doses to make up for a missed one.

Like all medications, Zovirax can have side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
